Type 1 Diabetes

November = Diabetes Awareness Month

Not many people know that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month! We are trying to change that one post at a time!

Parents with kids that have type 1 are passionate about November, because we have the floor this month! I will probably over post about how Joey is our hero, how he handles himself as a multisport athlete, at least I give fair warning!

Today I’m just gonna write a short entry about a special friendship that Joey has had for years.

joey and Alex
His friend Alex has been one of his biggest supporters!  He has been on numerous diabetes walk fundraisers,  he even left the WI Dells where we had our 8th grade football tournament.  It’s a two day tournament with a game on Saturday and then a game on Sunday with a ridiculously early start time! So we left the Dells for the Gala, a 2 hour drive, and then Tony was kind enough to drive us back to the Dells, where we arrived at 1:00 am! Alex left the fun times at the Dells to accompany Joey, telling his mom that he “couldn’t let Joey go alone!”

Being a great friend to Joey set Alex up to be a great support for his 3 year old cousin when he was diagnosed with type 1 last year!

Type 1 diabetes is on the rise, a girl in Joey’s class was just diagnosed last month! Even though it’s rare compared to type 2 diabetes, more people are being diagnosed everyday! We have to stop this! We need a cure!

It’s so important to know the symptoms, I will be posting them over and over again this month!

  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Blurry vision
  • Tired
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fruity smell on breath
  • Sometimes looks like the flu!

Please spread the symptoms to everyone you know. Especially your teacher friends, they are with our kids as much as we are, if they know the signs, we can catch it early!

Thanks to Alex for being such a good friend and supporter of Joey! We love ya!
