Jake Byrne dreamed of playing professional football. He had the size, the talent, the drive…but at age 14, he found out he also had type 1 diabetes.

Still, Jake was determined to reach his goal. And God was determined to guide and empower him all along the way.

A Passage from Jake’s book, First and Goal:  “In college, while starting as a tight end for the Wisconsin Badgers, Joey Balistrieri, a fourth-grader with type 1 diabetes, contacted me through social media.  According to Joey, the disease wasn’t his biggest problem.  He had to convince his mom he could still play football.”

Joey was around 9 or 10 years old  when he started asking about playing football.   Here is the story that lead up to the Devotional that Jake wrote about Joey, we were so excited to learn that it made the cut into the book FIRST AND GOAL!  We are so proud of Jake for writing his book, and so proud of Joey’s determination to play football, that got him into the book in the first place.

Please order the book, support Jake and his quest to help others with type 1 diabetes.  Good, positive stories are what we need in our community. Jake is paying it forward with his beautiful stories and devotionals about what it was like to grow up with type 1 diabetes.  Anyone will appreciate this book because we all have struggles, Jake shows us that regardless of what those struggles are, anything is possible with hard work, determination and God’s love and guidance.

The blog post on Suite D about Joey’s football journey.  It’s a series, with a post from Jake Byrne, and Holly Michael, Jake’s mom.
