How many times in a child’s life do they get asked the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” How many times do little boys and girls answer: “A Policeman or Firemen.” In fact, Joey has said for years that he wants to be a cop, he watches the show “Cops” all the time, I know it’s not the most appropriate show on TV for an almost 11 yr old to watch, but when your kid goes to a Parochial school, a little bit of the real world isn’t bad.
How do you tell your kid that he can’t pursue his dream, because of type 1 diabetes? Really? He spends his childhood getting pricked by needles, monitored like he’s the “King of Shebia” during sports, never left alone because parents are scared to death he will go low, confused by many that offer “sugar free” everything, while offering the fact that their overweight Uncle lost his foot to diabetes. Really, and now he can’t be the one thing that he would love to be?
He can’t become any of the following either: Detective, Pilot, Military, Fireman, Train Engineer, Astronaut, Truck driver, and many others. I’m looking for the complete list. Now, the military one I’m not to upset about, which is selfish and hypocritical, but I am a mom after all.
I guess I better get started trying to lead him toward a different career path , or maybe by the time he is out of college, there will be a cure for type 1, or better yet, maybe he will be the scientist that helps find the cure!!!
Have a great day, please say a cure for type 1 diabetes.
*No offense if you have offered sugar free snacks, we know you mean well.
